“Private & Mellow with Amazing Views”

My husband and I spent a few days of our honeymoon at Vista de Olas. We had never gone on a real vacation before our honeymoon, just trips to visit family, and we're very go-go-go city people, so arriving in lazy, mellow, fabulous Mal Pais was a culture shock. After 3 days at Vista de Olas, we felt like new people. My husband would look up from his book pool side and say "This is the most relaxed I've ever been in my life." Then an hour would pass and he would say "No, THIS is the most relaxed I've ever been in my life."

Roger and Heidi treat you like you're old friends visiting town -- they are helpful and friendly, they might have a beer with you, and they're main goal it to help you unwind and relax. Roger built the hotel himself, including the infinity pool, which was incredible. Watching the sunset from the pool nightly with a delicious drink was fantastic. My only complaint is that the hot tub wasn't hot, but it's ridiculously hot and humid in Costa Rica, so maybe that was for the best. The room was gorgeous, and the outdoor shower was heavenly, and every night you get to grill out with the other hotel guests who were all a fun, lively bunch.

If you want some dull, sanitized resort that is just like the US but in Costa Rica, don't come here. But if you want to stay somewhere with character with nice folks and the best sunset I've ever seen, stay at Vista de Olas.

“Absolute Paradise”

Let me start by saying I devoted an absurd amount of time to researching places to stay while in Malpais/Santa Teresa. I spoke to nearly every hotel and guesthouse in the area and, when I arrived, even checked out most of the places in person (in between eating surfing and drinking smoothies). As such, I consider myself something of an unofficial expert regarding accommodations (and dining for that matter) in Malpais/Santa Theresa. So hear me now...your search ends here! Vista de Olas is an absolute paradise!

The property is set high in the hills overlooking the entire coast which provides some of the most breath-taking views you will ever see. And the sunsets...oh the sunsets. We initially had our hearts set on staying on the beach but soon found out that there are development limitations near the beach and, as a result, there is a limited number of places to stay near the surf. Those that are there are generally overpriced, noisy and somewhat dilapidated. Vista is literally a 4 minute drive from the beach (everybody drives 4x4s or ATVs anyway) and is unique in that its set within the jungle which makes for some unbelievable wildlife experiences and some great hikes in and around the property.

The hotel is run by two expats (an American contractor Roger and his Swiss wife Heidi) and their 2 lovely Costa rican-Born sons. They have lived in the area for 20 years and are always willing to offer advice regarding activities, dining and various logistical matters.They are amazingly hospitable and two of the kindest, most laid-back people you will ever meet. And the hotel is a reflection of that. Beautifully landscaped with uniquely designed and comfortable cabinas. All have huge king size beds, outdoor showers and amazing views.

When we were there, it was the low season and the BBQ was not open (although we could have used it if we wanted) but in the high season Vista offers a unique outdoor dining experience where patrons choose from a huge variety of meats and seafood, which they BBQ themselves and then everyone eats communally. Its apparently super popular amongst both locals, travelers, and even some visiting Hollywood celebs!

Our time in Malpais was monumental and much of it had to do with Roger, Heidi and the boys. They managed to create a truly magical place that really cannot be captured in words. Every moment there generates a smile, every view is breathtaking, every second a memory. I can't stress enough to disregard any negative feedback you have read regarding this place. People are different and ultimately have different expectations. But if you're looking for the best view in the area, beautiful jungle surroundings, probably the best pool area you'll ever lay eyes on, the cleanest and most uniquely designed cabinas in the area, and a most hospitable and kind family...look no further.

“Trip that we will never forget!”

Roger and Heidi, the owners of Vista De Olas and their two children are "super cool". We felt that we were staying with old friends rather than at a random hotel. The grounds are beautifully kept the bungalows are nicely decorated, spacious and clean, and the atmosphere is incredibly relaxing.

If you are more of a “resort”, all inclusive type person Mal Pais is not for you. Mal Pais is a beautiful little surfing town with amazing family owned restaurants. If you want to get away form it all, enjoy meeting new people and like outdoor activities, this area is perfect!

“Extraordinary Setting”

Was recommended by a friend. Beautiful setting on a lush hillside well above the ocean -- one of the best I've encountered in my travels. (The only comparable one was a hotel above the Adriatic south of Dubrovnic.) A quiet hotel with amazing views of the long coastline from the bar & infinity pool, especially at sunset. Breezy & pleasant when it's hot & dusty down the hill. Gorgeous, clean, beautifully conceived rooms in individual cabinas. Definitely planning to return.

“The Perfect Valentines Getaway!!!”

What an incredible Valentines Day! My wife and I had been traveling through Costa Rica and kept hearing about this secluded retreat in the hills of Malpais. We decided to take a little detour for a Valentines getaway. As the view hit, our breath was taken away!!! Our gorgeous air conditioned bungalow was the perfect scene for a romantic evening. The restaurant was fantastic. I had the baby back ribs, which melted right off the bone, and my wife had the filet mignon. To wake up to that view reminded me of why we came to

Costa Rica in the first place. Our hosts Roger and Heidi were super friendly and helpful with little details like candles and flowers. We would recommend this experience to anyone and everyone!! Thanks again guys!!!

“Best Vacation Ever”

This place is by far the best place to stay in Mal Pais. Unbeleivable coastal views droping out of the infinity pool. The bungalows spacious clean beutifully crafted. The BBQ is outstanding and reasonably priced. Be sure to book a charter with Badlands Sport Fishing, in to days fishing we caught 10 out of 14 sailfish a wahoo and 4 huge dorado.
